Some Dental Restorations Require a Bone Graft

Posted .

Many people who visit Prosthodontics of the Carolinas are interested in dental restorations with a dental implant. This has become a very effective method for replacing one or more missing teeth.

Sometimes when a tooth is lost, the underlying bone structure is also compromised. This is more likely to be an issue if you’ve struggled with severe periodontal disease or if the tooth was lost to a severe dental trauma.

In many of these cases, there isn’t sufficient bone structure remaining to anchor a dental implant. In a situation like this, Dr. Ralph Hoffmann might recommend a bone graft treatment. This will call for oral surgery to insert a small amount of healthy bone tissue into the compromised area.

Once our prosthodontist has inserted the bone graft in place, your gums will be sutured and allowed to heal. Dr. Ralph Hoffmann will likely provide you with a prescription for an anti-inflammatory or other pain medication to maintain your comfort throughout the recovery process.

As time goes by, the bone graft will naturally bond with the living bone tissues and Dr. Ralph Hoffmann can start the process of installing a dental implant and a dental crown.
