Cleft Palate & Congenital Conditions

There are a variety of congenital conditions that can have a profound effect on the appearance, health, and function of your smile. One of the most common of these conditions is a cleft palate. A cleft palate is the incomplete fusion of the roof of the mouth, resulting in an opening in the gum tissue. This opening can make eating and speaking difficult. A cleft palate can affect any part of the upper mouth, and even extend to the lip area. Cleft palate tends to occur more frequently among girls than boys, and is one of the most common birth defects worldwide.

Cleft lip is another common congenital condition that affects babies. The condition is a result of the incomplete development of facial structures in utero. The defect creates slits in the upper lip and can cause the same types of issues as a cleft palate.
