Dental Attrition

Dental attrition is the deterioration that results over time due to tooth-to-tooth contact. The wear and tear of daily living can lead to dental attrition, so some level of decay on the incisal or occlusal level is expected as we age. If attrition becomes excessive, however, the enamel can become worn away and reveal the yellow, sensitive dentin layers of the tooth. Not only does this damage the appearance of your smile, it can also lead to severe oral pain and inhibited function. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is another cause of attrition that can lead to a damaged smile.

At Prosthodontics of the Carolinas, we can help you overcome the effects of dental attrition with a variety of comfortable services. Common treatments for attrition include:

Our experienced prosthodontists may recommend the use of a night guard if you grind your teeth while you sleep, so as to protect your smile and prevent further wear.
